The row with Hal Maddox had been going on since Whitsun, so when Mother sent me up the lane with two ash shafts and a bag of goose wing, I already knew how I would spend the afternoon: sulking under the damson tree while the bowyer's boy argued with his bow. Instead I found Hal in our walled garden, kneeling by the old climbing rose he'd been cutting back, a fletch of fresh feather clamped between his teeth.

He had cut two arrows from the hedge, straight as a surveyor's line, and was binding the feathers with waxed thread. 'Your father says you still owe me a yew stave,' he said round the quill. 'He says a lot of things.' I took the first shaft off the bench and turned it in the light. The fletching was clean, the nock notched with a small H, and three dark bands of scorch ran along the wood where the fire had caught it last winter.

We had both been at the butts on Saturday, both shooting at the painted diamond the vicar had nailed to the boards as a prize. Neither of us had hit it. Hal laid his second arrow across mine in an X, the way the fletchers' marks show on the barn door, and said a truce looked better in crossed wood than in words. I told him it was the stupidest thing I had ever heard, and then I laughed, and then I went to fetch the thread.

That evening the arrows hung above the mantel, crossed beneath a dried rose head, with the diamond pinned between their tips. Mother said it looked like a shop window. I did not tell her it was a treaty, and I did not tell Hal that I had kept the H-marked shaft for myself.
