Eight line-drawn arrows in a column

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet of eight arrows stacked vertically, each drawn as a single horizontal shaft with varied fletching and arrowheads. The linework is clean and hand-drawn, with solid black fills, hatching and small beads or rings along each shaft. The design is in black ink only on a plain white background, with even spacing between the arrows.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Past the dry well, where the salt road bends toward the hills, a fletcher named Imke sat on an upturned crate and bound feathers to reed with wet sinew. Her uncle had left her eight shafts and a sack of arrowheads traded at the river town, and he had told her to finish them before the caravans came through with the rains. She did not ask why a desert needed so many arrows. She only asked which head went on which shaft.

Each one she dressed differently, because a traveller lost in dust can still read fletching when he cannot read a map. The first had feathers curled like a hen's tail. The second had a bone barb split like a fork. The third she wrapped with a single brass ring so the wind would sing through it. The seventh she gave a head shaped like a thundercloud, though she had never seen rain fall from one out here.

When the sun dropped behind the ridge, she laid the arrows along the road in the order her grandmother had taught her, each one pointing its head toward the next one's feathers. Anyone who came across the line could follow it from shaft to shaft until the road opened onto the cistern under the rock. Nobody ever asked her how she knew the way.

The rains came early that year. Her uncle walked the line at dawn, counted seven arrows and then stopped at the eighth, which was not there. She had kept it. She was standing at the cistern with it in her hands, and when he came close she turned it over so he could see the stone head was hollow and full of water.
