Hand-drawn flower with leaves design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A single flower, resembling a poppy or anemone, with broad rounded petals and a dense, hatched centre sits atop a slender stem with two leaves. The outlines and internal petal lines are drawn in a fine, even brown ink with no shading beyond the hatching. The design is centred on a small cream card set on a plain white surface.

The anemone had come up through the cracks of the lime wall at Harrow Yard the spring Nell's father stopped speaking to the bees. She drew it three times on the back of a seed invoice before she got the petals right, rounding them the way the flower actually held its cup, not the way a child draws a sun. Her hand smelled of linseed and tar from the boat shed, and she kept the pencil behind her ear like a carpenter.

The dense heart was the hard part. She hatched it slowly, line over line, until the centre went dark enough to look like it was holding something back. Her brother Tom leaned over the bench and said it looked like a clock face that had given up. She told him to take the kettle through to their mother, who had not been out of bed since the bees swarmed the orchard and nobody came to collect them.
When the drawing was finished she pressed it onto a cream card and carried it down the lane to the post office, where the postmistress, Mrs Quayle, had promised to take anything addressed to the coast. Nell wrote no note. She only wrote the name of the harbour office in Padstow and put the stamp on crooked. Walking back past the wall, she found a single anemone opened in the lime crack, petals flat to the thin sun, and she left it exactly where it was.
