Daisy flower pencil sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A single daisy-like flower is drawn in graphite on a pale background, with the petals angled loosely and the seed head shaded darkly at the centre. The linework is soft and sketchy, with shading along the petals that gives them depth and a light-to-dark gradient. The flower fills most of the frame, with the petal tips trailing off towards the lower edge.

The tarmac outside Salt Wells had split clean down the middle, and a single daisy was shouldering its way up through the crack beside the pump. You pulled the van onto the gravel shoulder because the needle was on empty, and because nobody in their right mind grows anything out here. Marisol, behind the counter with her elbows on a stack of out-of-date atlases, watched you climb out and said the flower had come up after the rains, the first rains in two years. Her brother had bet you a tin of peaches you wouldn't stop. You didn't even know there'd been a bet.

You crouched by the crack with the heat coming off the road in sheets. The petals hung at odd angles, bent by the wind, each one lighter at the edge where the sun had got to it and darker where it curled inward. Under the bloom the seed head was a hard little knot of shadow. You had a stub of pencil in the glovebox and the back of a fuel receipt, so you sketched it there on your knee, pressing hardest at the centre, because that was where the flower held on and where the ground seemed to want it most.
When you handed the receipt to Marisol she turned it over twice and asked why it was so dark in the middle. You said that was just how it looked from down here. She folded it into the atlas at the page for the coast, the one nobody had driven to in years, and told you the peaches were on the house.
The next spring you came back the long way round. The first daisy was still there, gone pale and papery, and beside it, in the same crack, a second one had opened, its petals angled loosely towards the sun.
