Hand holding a wand under a sunburst

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A hand grips a long wand that rises towards a pale sunburst with black rays fading into grey shading. Thick black outlines define the hand, cuff and wand, with orange-brown accents on the wand and cuff and a faint red wash behind the hand. The word Lumos is written in black script beside the hand, with a black curling scroll-like flourish above it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every year the village school in Carrowdale held its reunion in the hall with the broken clock, and every year Mrs Pell asked the same question at the door: who still had the lamp? Nobody had a lamp. They had been children when the old schoolmaster stood on the step in the winter of the great frost, a brass stick in his fist, and said one word into the dark. The lane lit up as far as the church.

Tom Ashby said it was only a torch. Jenny Marr said it was a gas man's trick. But the schoolmaster had gone that spring, and his stick had gone with him, and the lane stayed dark after that.

This year Jenny came early with a sack of cold potatoes and a torch of her own, and found Tom already in the hall, standing under the dead clock. He had a sketch folded in his coat pocket, a hand gripping a long wand under a sun with rays like the teeth of a comb, and the word written in a curl beside it. He had kept it since the schoolmaster's last lesson. You lift the stick, you mean it, and the light goes where you point it.

They went out together to the step. Jenny raised her torch, Tom raised the folded paper like a stick, and the word, Lumos, came out of him low and steady. The lane lit up as far as the church, and a little further, and the old schoolmaster's name, which nobody had said in years, rang softly off the wall.
