Poppy with geometric spikes on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A vertical tattoo shows an orange poppy in bloom with red shading, joined to a long black stem with diamond-shaped spikes and dangling droplet motifs. A black curl sits beside the flower, and a crescent-like shape with teal and green shading sits at its centre. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are set against plain, lightly lit skin.

The tide turned at the third bell, and Ada Venn was still on the cliff path with a sack of poppy heads, cursing the wind that kept lifting her skirts over her face. Below, the chapel bell of Skerry Holm rang once for the boats that had not come in. She did not hurry. Her grandmother had taught her that the poppies on the north face only opened after the sea had taken someone, and that their seed was the one thing the water could not keep.

She went down the rock by the old iron spikes the first keepers had driven into the stone to mark the channel. Each one still wore a diamond of rust near its point. Water dripped from the overhang, one drop a minute, and she counted them the way her uncle had taught her, using the pale crescent he had carved into the slate by the lamp. Its horn pointed at the flood. Tonight it pointed lower than she liked, and the black curl of fern at its edge had uncurled a full turn since morning.

At the slipway, Nell Reilly was waiting with a tin cup of tea gone cold. Ada tipped the seed into her palm and told her to sow it where the spring tide reached, not above it. Nell asked what it would cost. Ada said the sea had already been paid, and that was the trouble with it.

By morning the stems had pushed up through the cracks in the slipway, thin and spiked, with orange heads folded tight as letters. The crescent on the slate had crept a finger's width higher than the water line, as if the tide had agreed, for once, to wait.
