Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large outlined hand making a sign language gesture with the thumb, index finger and little finger extended, shown in dark grey line work. The shapes are shaded lightly with grey wash for form. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, because the wind out past Carrow Flats swallows words before they leave your mouth, and my grandmother always said hands carry further. She cooked at the Haddon crossing, forty miles of nothing in every direction, and the one thing that road had plenty of was people who could not hear a horn.

Among them was a boy called Tomas Wrenfield who stepped off the night coach with one suitcase and a card reading WHERE IS THE WATER. Nobody at the counter could reach him until my grandmother lifted her hand, thumb, forefinger and little finger stretched out, the middle finger curled down into her palm. He stared, then laughed, and his answer came back in the same shape, quick and bright as a struck match.

They talked across the counter until dawn. By the time the sun cracked the flats he had taught her forty signs for engines, rain and the names of stars. When the coach driver leaned on his horn to hurry him, Tomas did not turn round. He simply raised that hand against the glass and held it there while the bus pulled away into the heat, and my grandmother raised hers back over the cups.

She kept a faded postcard of that road on the wall until she died. The bus was never seen again, but by spring the sign was on every shop sill in Haddon, and that is why, when a stranger lifts the same hand to you across a busy street, you still know what they are saying. Now pour the tea, and I will tell you how she learned the word for water.
