Butterfly and love infinity on upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A butterfly with red and blue wings sits above the word love in thin script, which is joined to an infinity loop. Small dots and star shapes surround the design. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred background of trees, with a pink top along the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The florist rang this morning to say the stems for the tables have come in from Kent, and I told her to put the blue ones by the window where the light falls. Your grandad would have hated the fuss. He wanted a registry office and a pie afterwards, and I told him the pie could come after the vows, not instead of them.
I am sending you the thing I have kept in the biscuit tin since 1962. It is a card, pale as weak tea, with a butterfly drawn in biro: red wings edged in blue, and beside it the word love curled into a figure eight lying on its side. He did it on the back of a bus timetable the week we got engaged, then said the loop was for us, because it never stopped and never had to.
Don't read too much into the stars he dotted round it. He was no poet. He said he'd run out of ideas and needed something to fill the corners, and I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the kerb outside the Co-op.
When you slide the ring on tomorrow, look at the card first. Put it in your breast pocket where Anya can't see it until the speeches. Then, when the room goes quiet, tell her it is the only thing your grandad ever drew that I kept, and that you intend to keep going round the same loop, for as long as the two of you can manage.
Love, Nan
