Sign language I love you hand on lower leg
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline drawing of a hand making the sign language gesture for I love you, with the thumb, index and little finger extended and the middle and ring fingers folded. The line is bold and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The hand is centred on the photograph, with a dark textured surface visible behind the limb.

Ruth Abernethy had signed across the width of the harbour for thirty-one years, because the gulls swallowed shouting and the wind took whatever the gulls left. Ruth stood on the bottom step of the slipway with her coat buttoned one hole out, watching the water go from silver to pewter.

He had taught her the sign at the Christmas dance in 1993, when the band was too loud for anyone to hear a word. Thumb out, first finger and little finger raised, the middle two folded down like a gate pulled shut. She had laughed and got it wrong twice. Now her fingers were cold and stiff from the rope, but she made the shape anyway and held it up above her head where the fish market lights could catch it.
Across the water the lantern swung once, then twice. After a while his hand came up against the glow of the quay, the same three fingers, steady as a post. He had always said it was the only sign worth trusting in bad weather, because you could make it in gloves, with one hand on a winch and the other on a rope, and still be understood.
Ruth went home when the boat slid behind the point. She left the back door on the latch, filled the kettle and set it on the hob. It was ticking as it cooled when the lantern came round the end of the wall, and she was still standing at the window with her hand raised, not yet ready to put it down.
