A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the Harvest Moon Fair ever asked Vivian Marsh where she had learned to sell a fortune. She simply did it, leaning across the card table on the Wakefield green with a stick of rose-pink lipstick in one hand and a string of cheap pearls looped over her wrist. I was fourteen and her dogsbody, and I believed the pearls were real until the August rain ran the paste off them.

She had a rule about the red pendant she wore on a velvet ribbon: never open it in daylight. Inside, she said, was the silhouette of the card-sharp from Hull who had sold her the lipstick, then the fair, then a broken heart she refused to describe. I believed her because she made the story expensive to doubt. Every customer who sat down at her table left with a card in her sharp blue hand, the words FEMME FATALE curled across the top like a banner, and every one of them came back the next week for a second reading.

On the last night before the fair packed up, a lad from the dodgems crept under the tent flap, dared to touch the pendant, and found it heavier than it looked. Vivian laughed and let him hold it. Then she closed his fingers around it and told him to keep it until someone wanted it more than he did.

The lipstick is still in my coat pocket, worn down to a sliver. Every autumn, when the fairs come back to the same green, I catch myself leaning across a folding table and reading cards for strangers, the pearls cool against my wrist.
