Hibiscus flowers with green swirls
Botanical · Colour · Flash
Three red hibiscus flowers with dark outlines and yellow centres sit among green leaves at the centre of the composition. Green curling vines and swirls extend outwards, with orange and green paint splatters behind them on a cream background. The drawing uses bold outlines and flat colour with some shading on the petals, and it has no visible body placement.

The orange tin went over before I could catch it, and the splash ran down the back of my hand and pooled in the grain of the pine board like something that had been waiting to escape. Lorna kept the sign shop above the fishmonger's on Quay Street, and she was halfway through lettering a boat's name in gold leaf when it happened. I expected a scolding. Instead she wiped my wrist with turpentine, studied the mess for a long minute, and took down a fine liner.

'Paint the flower,' she said. 'Hibiscus. They grow wild behind the harbour wall when nobody's looking.' I had never painted a flower in my life. I had only ever done letters, straight and square, and my hand didn't know how to be loose.
We worked until the gulls went quiet. Three blooms first, red as the hull of the Margaret Rose, each petal laid down with one heavy stroke. Then the leaves, then the green vines curling out as if the wind had combed them. Lorna let the orange and green splashes stay exactly where they had fallen. 'Nothing's wrong with a mess,' she said, 'if you give it somewhere to go.'
When the board dried, the sign had a flower where the name should have sat, and nobody on the quay complained. The skipper paid double and asked for the splatter on his cap. Lorna kept the first board propped against the till, and sometimes at closing she would tap the yellow centre of one bloom and tell me it was still wet.
