Femme Fatale hand with roses and pearls

Traditional · Colour · Flash

The design shows a long-nailed hand wearing rings and a pearl necklace, holding a green and pink lipstick, with the script words Femme Fatale across the wrist. Two pink roses with green leaves frame the hand, and a cameo pendant with a black cat silhouette hangs below. The bold black outlines and solid fills are set against a flat teal background in a classic flash composition.

Every evening the cat walked the platform at Harrowgate Junction, though no one had ever seen her board a train. Mrs Ada Pell kept the refreshment room there and had done since her husband went to France and did not come back. She said the cat had been his before he left, and that she only fed it because the scraps would go to waste otherwise.

The woman who came off the nine-fifteen that wet March had red nails and a green lipstick case she kept turning in her gloved hand. She asked for tea and then for a room, and then she asked Ada whether the station still had the stationmaster's old cameo, the one with the black cat painted under glass. Ada said it was in the lost property cupboard, and that nobody had come for it in twenty years. The woman said she would pay anything. Ada said she would take a lipstick instead, and the woman laughed and gave her one, pink at the top and green beneath, and Ada put it on for the first time in her life.

That night the cat sat on the sill of the ticket office and would not come in. In the morning the cameo was gone from the cupboard and the woman's train was gone from the timetable, and there were two pink roses pressed flat on the counter, their stems wrapped in pearl beads that had come off a necklace nobody remembered owning.

Ada never wore the lipstick again. She kept the cat, and when she was old the porters said she kept a cameo too, on a chain under her collar, and that when the trains ran late she would touch it and say the woman had at least been honest about what she was.
