Hands and fingers with traditional tattoos
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A person is photographed from behind with both hands resting on their shoulders, showing a skull tattoo on the back of one hand and several small finger tattoos including stars, a dagger, a heart and a dark dot. Dark ink on the neck and upper arms is partly visible above a black tank top, with a blurred green background. The fingers show mainly black linework with red and yellow touches, so the image is mixed in colour.

Every Thursday the lift at Halsey House stopped on the ninth floor without anyone pressing the button, and Mrs Oyelaran would hear the gate rattle open and know the Stranger had come to play. He never gave a surname. He sat on the edge of her settee with his coat still buttoned and laid a pack of cards on the coffee table, the corners worn soft as cloth.

The rule was simple, as rules in tower blocks tend to be. Each player staked something that could not be bought back at the shops. Her stake was the year her husband had kept the allotment going, and his was whatever the card turned up. In nine years she had won a grandson's safe passage down a fire escape, a leak that stopped in the flat below, and a night of sleep for a boy on the fourth floor who cried for his mother. He had won nothing yet, because she always kept the ace of spades back in her sleeve, and he knew it, and played anyway.
In March the lift broke, and the Stranger came up nine flights of stairs with the cards in his pocket. He found her door chained and a note taped to the frame in her neat capitals. It said that she had seen what he took from the boy and the others, and that this Thursday she would deal him the cold hand herself. On the back, in biro, someone had drawn a dagger, a small star and a red heart.
He read it twice on the landing, then folded it into his coat and went back down. The lift worked on the Friday, and it never stopped on the ninth floor again.
