Watercolour botanical florals on the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands are held together, with a cluster of red poppy-like blooms, blue forget-me-nots, sprigs and dark green leaves tattooed across the back of one hand and wrist. The linework is soft and the shading is painterly, giving a watercolour effect with some fading at the edges. Colour dominates the design, and the flowers are arranged loosely so they wrap from the knuckles towards the wrist.

The 6.42 to Carlisle was late again, so Nan and I sat on the bench under the clock with a paper bag of pear drops between us. She had a seed packet in her coat pocket, the kind with a faded poppy on the front, and she kept turning it over as if the back might tell her something new.

Forget-me-nots, she said, grow where nobody plants them. Her father used to say they were the cheekiest flowers in the county, pushing up through the gravel on the embankment outside Penrith, where the signalman let him walk the line on Sundays. I asked why she'd never planted any at home. She laughed and said that was the point, you couldn't make them stay.

The tannoy crackled and the Carlisle train slid in, brakes sighing. Nan pressed the packet into my palm and closed my fingers over it. 'Poppies for the spoil heap,' she said. 'Blue ones for the fence line. Your grandad would have sworn at me for giving a girl seeds instead of a ticket.'

I climbed aboard with the packet warm in my fist. Through the smeared window she was already small on the bench, one hand lifted, the other still holding the pear drops bag open like an offering. When the train pulled out past the signal box, I saw the embankment rolling by, grey gravel and then, for a second, a flash of blue where something had refused to be planted.
