Geometric finger tattoos and floral forearm
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are raised in front of a wide-brimmed black hat, with the face hidden from view. The fingers carry small outlined triangles and geometric shapes, while the back of the left hand shows a spider-like design with fine linework. The right hand and forearm have a larger shaded floral piece in grey and black ink against a patterned gold and black background.

The last pennant came down on a wet Tuesday, and Oda Fenwick folded it into a square no bigger than a prayer book. She had mended that canvas since the war. Forty-one triangles, each cut from a different coat, stitched into a big top that had not seen a full house in six summers. Nobody on the lot could say whose coats they had been. Oda only knew that the spider had been in the rigging before the canvas, and would be there after.

The spider was grey and patient and lived above the centre pole. Each night it strung a web between the guy ropes, and each morning the performers found it worked into a shape like a flower head, petals drawn in fine lines. Tobias Crane, the ringmaster, took it for an omen. When the elephants were sold to a haulage firm in Lincoln and the trapeze rigging went for scrap, he stopped reading omens and started counting the takings in the cash tin, which was empty.
On the final night Oda climbed the ladder with a bucket of waxed thread and found the web had spread over the lion-cage door, a pattern of chains linking one rope to the next. She sat with it for a long while. Then she cut a single triangle loose from the canvas and tucked it into her apron, leaving the spider its ropes.
The tent was taken down in March. In May, a woman in Harrogate wrote to ask whether the circus had anything left to sell, and Oda posted her the pennant wrapped in brown paper. Above the empty ring, the web was already back, neat and grey, strung between the ropes.
