Botanical · Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows two grey, stylised hands holding knitting needles, with pink yarn looping between them. Below sits a lotus flower with leaves and a pink yarn ball resting on top. The linework is dark and precise, with grey wash shading and pink accents on a stained brown and cream background.

Maud had been knitting the same grey sock for three weeks because the wardrobe trunk held no wool that was not already sewn into a costume. The Halloran Brothers Travelling Circus had struck its big top in Swindon in March, and now only the lion tent was left, pitched on a council field outside Crewe, its canvas sagging where the rain had pooled. She sat on an upturned crate by the caravan step, needles clicking, while the last of the performers loaded the van behind her.

Dennis, who had walked the high wire for thirty-one years, came out with two mugs of stewed tea and lowered himself onto the step with a groan. "The Tilleys are taking the ponies," he said. Maud did not look up. The pink yarn in her lap was the last skein from the spangled leotards, and she knew it would run out before the heel was turned. Her mother had once said a lotus grew out of mud. Then she had sold the mud, the way she sold everything else, and bought a caravan with the proceeds.
The light went copper over the field. Dennis finished his tea and talked about Ostend, about a cold night in 1979 when the wire had iced over and nobody had fallen, and Maud listened and counted stitches. When the sock was finished she cast off, tucked the tail through, and held it up to the sky. It was too small for any foot in the circus, which was the point. She wound the leftover pink into a ball, set it on the empty lion pedestal, and kept her needles going on a second sock anyway, because a sock was something you could finish, and very little else was.
