Hand holding a bloodied quill with rose

Neo-trad · Hand · Colour · Flash

A coloured drawing of a hand with dark red painted nails holding a black feather quill that drips with red. A rose with grey shading is drawn on the back of the hand, and a grey lace cuff sits at the wrist, with dark red splashes spreading across the page. Bold outlines and flat colour fills give the design a classic bold look on a cream background.

The quill had split on the third line of the codicil, and the solicitor was already rapping the back-room door with his cane. Edith Vane pulled the ruined feather from its bed of sand, wiped the shaft on her lace cuff and dipped it again. The ink had thickened in the cold. It sat on the paper a shade too red, and she told herself it was the lamp.

The cuff was the only fine thing she owned, starched stiff for Sundays, and the ink had already crept into its loops. Mr Thorne had left the house to his nephew, not to his widow. The clause that said otherwise sat in her own careful hand, copied from a draft a man had pressed on her at four o'clock with his eyes on the window. She had asked no questions. Forty years of copying had taught her that a clerk who asks questions soon becomes a clerk with no post.

When the solicitor came in she had the fair copy sanded and folded. He read it standing, lips moving, then turned back to the codicil and read it again. His gaze went to the red spattered across her wrist, then to the page, then to the open ink pot.

'You have made an error, Miss Vane,' he said.

'I have made it where it will be read,' she said, and laid the feather down beside the ink.
