Fine line black script lettering runs across the upper back of a woman seated on gravel in front of graffiti.

Handwritten script quote across upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind sits on gravel beside a railway track, with her head bowed and her back bare. A thin black handwritten script quote runs across her upper back, with a shorter second line set beneath the first. The backdrop is a concrete wall covered in bright green, blue and black graffiti, and the palette of the photograph is muted apart from the background paint.

Ada had told Mick Fenwick twice that the wall under Cutler Road bridge was no place for a girl with a good hand. The mural that spring was all green and blue and black, lettering nobody over thirty could read. Low down, where the ballast met the brick, she wrote a line in the careful joined hand her mother had drilled into her at the Board school. He found it on a Friday, the paint still tacky in the drizzle. It said she was sorry she had wanted him so much, and that was simply how things were.

He didn't answer her on the wall. He waited until the late goods had gone through and then walked the sleepers with a stub of chalk in his coat pocket, writing small on the dark creosote where the lamp didn't reach. It took him most of the night to get the words straight, because his own hand was rougher than hers and he had never been good at saying anything twice.

At six the next morning the 6:12 slowed for the bend, as it always did, and the driver leaned from his cab to look at the bridge. Ada was already there with her tin. Mick raised his lamp, and she read the chalk without stepping closer, then laughed once and wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist.
