Infinity symbol with three birds and Always
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol sits on the shoulder blade, with three small bird silhouettes perched on the upper loop and the word Always in cursive script on the lower loop. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading, and the tattoo is set against smooth, pale skin on a plain grey background.

Shush now, the band's gone for their tea, so you'll have to make do with me. See the rail outside the top windows? Three starlings. They've sat there every October since this hall opened above the prom, and not once has a fourth joined them.

Ivy Pell was the caller here in the years before the war. She had a lad called Teddy Quill who worked the lamps on the pier, and one wet Thursday he bent a length of copper wire over the bench into a figure of eight and slid it onto her finger. Endless, he said. Like a sum that never comes out, so you'll always have a reason to come back and try it. She laughed and told him to stop being soft, and she wore it every dance after that.
Teddy went across in the spring and didn't come home. Ivy kept calling the last waltz regardless, and that first October the birds came to the rail, three of them, and she swore they were looking straight at her through the glass. She never married. She never took the wire off either, though it turned green and then black with the years.
The night the hall was sold, Ivy walked out past that rail with the wire still on her finger. The three birds lifted together and flew the loop out over the grey water, round and round, and not one came down until the light went. So when the band comes back, you dance the last waltz properly. That's the only rule I've got.
