Hares, crescent moon and quote on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large hare leans down towards a smaller hare beside a crescent moon, with tufts of green grass along the base. The hares are outlined in black with orange and brown shading, and the moon has a light blue wash. Black script beneath reads I love you right up to the moon and back, set in a loose horizontal line across the lower part of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Above Scarrow Harbour the hares kept to the cliff grass, where the wind off the sea flattened everything except their ears. The fishwives said the moon came down each night to drink from the harbour, and that a hare who sat still enough could feel its pull in her feet.

Little Tansy, the youngest leveret, was never still enough for anyone. Every evening she hopped to the edge of the cliff and shouted at the moon to come closer. Her mother, Old Brack, would lean her long body down over the girl and fold an ear across her back, and tell her the same thing each time. "Love goes up as far as the moon, and then it goes further, and comes back down to you." Tansy did not believe it. She wanted proof.

One still night in late autumn, Tansy slipped past the gorse and out along the harbour wall, where the gulls slept in rows. The moon hung low and silver over the water, and she was certain she could reach it from the last stone. She stood on the stone. It was wet. She slid, and the sea caught her back feet and pulled.

Brack came along the wall without a sound and took the scruff of her neck in her teeth, then dragged her back onto the grass. Tansy was shaking. "You said it comes back," she said. Brack said nothing. She curled her body round the small one until the cold had gone out of them both. In the morning the moon was pale over the headland, and Tansy, looking up at it, found she no longer needed to ask it for anything.
