Rabbit and script quote on ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle black outline of a standing rabbit sits beside cursive script that wraps diagonally across the skin, partly cut off at the edge of the frame. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or added colour. The tattoo fills the upper part of the frame against a plain skin background, with a black top covering the upper body.

Dilys kept a grey doe in a hutch behind the chapel wall, because the pit gave nothing to keep that did not die underground. Her father came up black every evening and said the doe was bread thrown to the wind. She fed it anyway, on dandelion heads and the outer leaves the market women left in the gutter, and the doe ate without asking for more.

When the doe grew old her ears went thin as wet paper and she stopped eating. On the last Sunday of March Dilys carried her up the rise above Coal Row, past the spoil heaps, to the field the old men called the Thousand, where the rabbits went when the snares and the dogs were finished with them. Nobody had come back to say what was there. She set the doe down in the grass and told her to go on, and the doe went on.
That week the water came into the low seam and Dilys's father was among the men who did not come up for three days. When he did come up, he was carried on a plank with his leg bound in sacking. He asked for nothing but water and the doe. Dilys told him the truth, and he was quiet a long while before he said, "Then she has company," and turned his face to the wall.
Next morning, when Dilys went to the rise with a cabbage leaf in her apron, a grey rabbit sat on the crest against the sky, ears up, watching the village as if counting the chimneys. It did not run. Dilys left the leaf on the stone and came home, and by the end of spring there was a rabbit on that rise every evening, and her father sat at the window to see it.
