Sitting rabbit outline tattoo
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a rabbit seated in profile, facing right, with long ears laid back and a rounded body. The linework varies in thickness, tapering at the ears, tail and paws, and the interior is left as bare skin with no shading. The plain background of skin fills the frame, with the design centred and the subject easy to read.

Dearest Ada, the snow came over the col on Tuesday and sealed the lower path, so I have not been down to the village since the feast. Father sends word by the carter that the goats must be brought in before Candlemas, but I told him the nannies will not walk through drifts that reach their bellies. Give Mother my love and tell her the stove is going well and the kettle never empties.

Something has been sitting outside the byre every morning this week. I thought at first it was a stone the wind had rolled off the scree, but on Thursday it moved its ears. It is a hare, or a rabbit, I cannot tell which, and it keeps its body turned towards the hut with its back to the wind, as if it has been posted there. I have started leaving it the outer leaves of the cabbages, and it eats them without once looking at me.
Yesterday I tried to draw it on the frost of the window with my thumb. The lines came out thick at the belly and thin as thread at the ears, and I could not make the paws stay put. I rubbed it out and drew it again, and then the sun came round the ridge and the whole picture ran down the glass like wet ink. When I went out, the rabbit had gone, and there was only one neat set of prints leading off towards the pass, and a single line in the snow where its tail had dragged.
Write soon, and tell me if the bells still ring in the square on feast days, because I have started counting them and I am sure I have lost my place.
