Nobody at the Crown had brought a wand, which Dougie said was the first sign the whole evening would be a waste of a Friday. Still, I had the letter in my jacket pocket, cream paper gone soft at the folds, and I kept touching it as if it might vanish. We ordered halves of cider and sat under a photo of a bowling team nobody could name. Priya Hadfield came in late with a scarf knotted at her throat, the old house colours, red and gold, faded to the shade of weak tea. She dropped a paper bag on the table. Inside were sherbet lemons and a pack of jelly beans, the ones with the grey flavours, and she said, "Don't eat the green ones, they taste of the boiler room."
Then she unfolded a sheet from her coat, soft as cloth, drawn in biro on the back of a fire-drill notice. Our map. Every corridor we had ever hidden in was there, with tiny footprints labelled with our initials, creeping behind Mr Okafor's classroom and up the back stairs to the old chapel. Dougie traced the route to the bike sheds with a chip.
"I never got an acceptance," Priya said. "You know that? I wrote all of ours. Year Nine, your dad's typewriter, every crest I could cut from a catalogue."
I laughed until the barman looked over. She didn't laugh. She just tapped the map where the castle was drawn, with its little ink towers, and said, "Somebody still has to come back and check it's true."
