Six black ink flash designs on a sheet
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of six hand-drawn tattoo flash designs on white paper. The designs include a sleeping crescent moon with clouds, a rose with a ribbon banner, a dagger with a ribbon, a profile silhouette beside a skull, a sun with rays and a banner, and a heart inside a rope border, each with lettering in its banner or around its edge. The linework is bold and clean in black ink with solid fills and no colour.

The crescent moon above the relay desk had been asleep for as long as anyone on Halcyon Ring could remember, eyes shut, a cloud tucked under its chin like a pillow. Tamsin Ayre had inherited the sheet of flash with the desk, six faded designs pinned under the lamp, and she read the banners every shift the way other people said grace. Stay alive. Battling fear. Become someone.

The station's sun was a brass disc in the ceiling, rayed and banded, and it had been dimming by a fraction each year since the cold came. The maintenance logs said the reactor would hold for another thirty years if someone kept the coolant loop clean. Nobody did. Tamsin spent her nights scrubbing filters with a toothbrush and a flask of vinegar, talking to the rope-bordered heart on the wall, the one that said take the pain, ignite. Her supervisor called it superstition. The dock crews called her the moon lady.
On the night the loop finally gave its low, clean hum, she climbed onto the desk and unpinned the sheet. The double-sided silhouette looked back at her, a skull grinning on one side and a woman's dark profile on the other, and for once she didn't read the lettering. She held the drawing against the lamp housing, where the heat was strongest, and watched the paper go thin and bright with light.
By the time the shift bell rang, the moon's eyes were open, and the glow had crept back over the docks like a tide coming in. Tamsin didn't check the logs. She watched the moon blink once, then again, and kept her thumb on the switch.
