Umbrella, rose and anatomical heart flash
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The sheet shows two traditional-style designs. On the left, a green umbrella with raindrops falling beneath it sits above a red rose, with a banner reading YOU ARE THE SMELL BEFORE RAIN. On the right, a red anatomical heart with blue vessels has a banner reading YOU ARE THE BLOOD IN MY VEINS. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a tan parchment background give it a classic flash look.

The bride's father had sold the good cart horse to pay for the feast, so Tam Greave walked the lane to Holloway church carrying his intended's green umbrella over one shoulder like a fishing rod. The sky above the Sallow Brook had gone the colour of wet slate, and Nell had said at breakfast that rain would come before noon, though the morning was still dry and the hedges were only beginning to smell of it.

Her grandmother had taught her the old saying. A person's true scent is the one that rises off the rose briars just before a storm, sharp and green and a little like iron, and you could not know anyone properly until you had smelled them that way. Tam had never understood it. He only knew that the blood in his veins ran faster whenever she stood near him, and that a man who could not explain that would have to say it plainly, which he had practised all week in the barn with the cow for an audience.
The first drops fell as the vicar reached for his book. Tam opened the umbrella over the doorway and held it high while the guests shuffled under the porch, and when Nell came up the path she was already soaked to the skin, laughing, a red rose pinned crookedly at her collar. She said she had not needed the umbrella at all. He said he had not brought it for her. She asked who for, then, and he told her the truth, that he had needed something to hold over his own head, because looking at her had made him dizzy.
They went home afterwards under that one green canopy, dripping on both of them, the rain drumming the silk. Nell kept the rose. Tam kept the umbrella handle in his fist, and neither of them minded that the path was too narrow for two people walking side by side.
