Headdress portrait and owl on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a woman in a feathered headdress with red, blue and black plumes, her hand resting against her chin and her eyes downcast. Below her, a detailed owl with orange eyes looks forward, set against green foliage. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft gradients on the skin and feathers, and the design fills the outer thigh in a tall composition.

The owl has been sitting on the same bent branch of the sycamore outside Ward 7 for three nights now, and by the third you have started saying good evening to it on your way to the sluice room. Its eyes catch the light from the car park lamps, two rings of orange that never blink when you pass beneath.

At half two the bleep goes off in the side room, and you go, leaving your tea cooling on the trolley. Mr Adeyemi in bed four wants to know whether it is still raining. It is not. You tell him about the owl instead, how it turns its whole head as though it sits on a hinge, and he laughs so hard his monitor starts complaining, and you both pretend that is not the reason you are still talking at three in the morning.
Near dawn you step out to the back doors for air. The owl has gone, but a feather lies on the wet tarmac, banded brown and cream, longer than your hand. You pick it up and tuck it into the pocket of your fleece, next to the biro and the pager that will not stop.
When the day staff arrive, Sunita asks what you have got there. You say it is evidence. She asks evidence of what. You look up at the sycamore, empty now, and shrug, because the thing about nights is that somebody has to stay awake to notice what came and went.
