Wolf head with dreamcatcher on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A wolf's head is shown in profile-leaning view, filling the forearm, with a teal ring and cream dotwork beading around it. Bold black outlines define the fur, eyes and nose, with soft grey and orange-brown shading and feathery red and cream plumes behind. Colour ink dominates the composition, with teal, orange, red and cream sitting against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dorrie mixed the teal herself, from a jar her mother had carried round the fairs since the war, and she would not let anyone else touch the brush for the wolf. I held the lamp while she worked on the side of the Lucky Dip caravan at Mallow Green, the paint still tacky and smelling of linseed and rain.

The wolf was meant to draw eyes to the dreamcatcher stall. Dorrie painted its ears first, then its tired amber eyes, then the cream beads she called dew, dotted in careful arcs around the hoop. Every night after the last ride shut down she sat on the caravan steps with her pipe and told me the ring was for catching bad dreams before they reached the sleepers, and that the red feathers hung behind it so the wolf could tell which way the wind was blowing.
The fair moved on in October. We left the caravan at a farmer's barn because the axle had gone, and I went back the following spring on my bicycle, alone. The rain had lifted the orange from the muzzle and the grey had gone chalky, but the teal ring was still bright, and someone had hung a real dreamcatcher from the hook beneath it, its web full of blown seed and one small grey feather.
I didn't take it down. Dorrie had always said a dream caught is a dream kept, and I wanted to see what she had been keeping all those years on her side of the common. I stood under the wolf until the light went, and the beads seemed to shift, the way a painted eye does when you have looked at it for too long.
