Feathered headdress profile on upper back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman's profile sits beneath a large feathered headdress with turquoise, green and red-tipped feathers, and a bold band across her forehead. Below her, a pink and purple flower cluster and dangling dark feathers fill the lower part of the design, with a long braid falling over her shoulder. Solid black outlines and flat colour fills dominate, set against the smooth skin of the upper back.

Dear Mum, the copper in the lamp has gone green again, so Mr Halloran says I am to scrub it with vinegar before Saturday, and I have not told him I would rather scrub the feathers. He let me colour the big headdress sheet yesterday, the one with the lady in profile that hangs by the door. Turquoise first, then the green laid over it while the first coat was still tacky, and he said a feather has to look wet even when it is dry.

The red tips were the trouble. Red will not sit flat on the skin unless the black underneath is solid, so he made me go over every outline three times with the liner until my wrist ached. A dockhand came in asking for a copy for his shoulder, and Mr Halloran charged him double for the flowers, which he says are the only honest part of any design because nobody ever asks what they mean.
Last night I stayed late and traced the braid onto tracing paper, the long one falling over the shoulder with its red bead at the end. I pressed too hard at the bead and the pencil went clean through in one place. I have kept that sheet. It is the only drawing I have made that came out exactly as I meant it to, hole and all.
