Crab with palm sunset and plumeria
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A teal crab with raised claws sits across the centre of the design, with a palm tree and sunset scene inside its shell. An orange plumeria flower with green leaves overlaps the lower right of the crab. Bold black outlines define the forms, and the crab and flower use soft colour shading in teal, orange, red and green against pale skin.

Maud drops the crab into the bucket at your feet and it goes at the tin sides with both claws raised, clacking like tailor's shears left out in the rain. You are three days out from Strood with a hold full of gravel and a headache that started under Rochester bridge, and you had hoped for a quiet tide. Instead the crab is tangled in the mooring line, and Maud is already laughing at you from the wheelhouse door.

"Pot's full of them," she says. "Take the big one home for your tea."
You don't want tea. You want the shell, because when you turn it over under the cabin lamp there is a picture painted on the inside of the carapace: a palm tree leaning over a small sunset, the sun a smear of orange going pink at the edges, a strip of blue sea under a sky painted with more care than anything else on this barge. Dennis did that, years back, when he still crewed the Lark. Irene grew a plumeria on the wheelhouse sill for him until the frost got it, and he swore the flowers were the only thing on the river that smelled of somewhere else.
Maud comes down the steps with a tin mug and sees what you're holding. "He did one for every crab he ever pulled out of the estuary," she says. "Said the trip down was long enough to need a view."
At first light you carry the crab up the slipway at Hoo and set it on the mud. It stands there a moment, claws up, as if it has been asked a question, then turns sideways and walks into the water without looking back. You keep the shell. You prop it on the rail, painted side out, so the sun coming up over Kent catches the little orange sunset and makes it look, for about a minute, like the real thing.
