Heart and quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm tattoo shows a stylised heart in black and teal with flowing swirl lines and a small star cut into the upper curve. Beside it, a line of blue-grey script reads "I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you." The linework is clean and the lettering is evenly spaced, set against a patterned black and white blanket.

Wenna Hallow kept the bread ovens at Lower Thorne, the last village before the forest began, and on the morning after the hard frost her husband Tobias did not come down for his breakfast. He had gone into the oaks the evening before with his axe and a flask of cider, as he always did, along the path everyone warned their children away from.

She walked out with a lantern when the first star showed above the alders. The old women said the wood gave back what it kept if you asked plainly and offered something worth the asking. Wenna had no silver, so she unpicked a long thread of blue wool from her own shawl, tied one end to the root of the oldest tree at the water's edge, and spoke to the dark water.

"I will not have him back for nothing," she said, "and I will not have him back for less than the world."

The pond stirred though there was no wind. A pale curl turned under the surface like smoke off a banked fire, and a small cold light rose and settled in her palm. It was a star no bigger than a sloe, burning a little teal at its edges. A voice came from among the trunks, soft and tired. "Take it, and he walks out at dawn. But the wood keeps one bright thing for every man it lends back, and you will carry the dark of it."

"Then I will carry it," Wenna said. "I would not change him for the world, but I would change the world for him." The trees went still. At first light Tobias came stumbling out of the oaks, cold and bewildered, his axe still on his shoulder. Wenna sewed the star into the blue wool at his collar, and she never once asked him where the dark had gone, because she could feel it in her own hands when she kneaded the dough.
