Heart clock with roses and pearls design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed drawing of an ornate heart-shaped clock face with Roman numerals and hands, framed by two fully opened roses with shaded petals and serrated leaves. Scrollwork and a curling flourish sit behind the clock, and a chain of pearls loops around the lower left and upper right. The work uses soft pencil-like shading in black and grey on a plain white background, with strong contrast in the rose centres and clock frame.

The bakehouse clock stopped at ten to four again, so Mara wound it with her mother's brass key and told the dough it was still night. Nobody in Hollin Cross could remember who had hung the clock. It was shaped like a heart, with Roman numerals worn pale by steam, and it only ran while the ovens were warm. Her mother used to say the hands kept time for whoever was awake first.

Before the bells, the miller's son came down the lane with a string of pearls he had won at cards and nothing to eat. Mara had no coin to give him, so she gave him the heel of the morning loaf and a rose cut from the wall, which had flowered out of season that year. He laughed and said the clock was owed a debt. He went over the hill in the grey light, and she did not see him again for thirty years.
When he came back he was old, and his coat was lined with pearls that ran through every pocket. He asked for bread. Mara wrapped a loaf in cloth, though the ovens were cold and the dough had not risen, and the clock began to tick on its own. The hands crept round to the hour the sun found the lane. She pressed the pearls back into his palm and told him to keep them, since he had already paid for the hour.
