Heart lettering tattoo on thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A teal scrollwork heart and a larger heart-shaped block of black, stylised lettering sit side by side on the thigh. The black letterforms are bold and angular with ornamental curls, and the teal filigree has smooth, flowing linework with light shading. The photo is taken at an angle with a patterned fabric and a dark shoe at the edge of the frame.

You have sold tickets at Thornbury Road for nineteen years, and you can tell the people who are leaving for good by how they hold their change. The woman at the window on Friday counts it twice, then slides a folded sheet under the glass. On it someone has drawn two hearts in biro: one curled with filigree like a wrought iron gate, the other filled with black letters so angular and tangled that you cannot read a word, only the shape of a name trying to get out.

"Can you tell me where this goes?" she asks. You know before you unfold it, because the same drawing sits in the lost property tin under your counter, one of a dozen sent back from Ashcombe by clerks too kind to throw them away. The line closes for engineering at midnight. Platform four has no lights now, only a yellow sign and a gap where the timetable used to be.
You take her money and hand over her ticket, and for a moment neither of you mentions the sheet. Then you tell her the truth, which is that the last train to Ashcombe leaves at 17:42 and only stops at platform four when someone is standing on it with a case in hand. She gives a short, surprised laugh and folds the drawing carefully into her coat.
Through the window you watch the train pull out with its lights on. On the glass of the empty shelter you catch your own reflection: a clerk with a tin full of other people's hearts and no ticket of his own.
