Hello Kitty outline filled with peonies
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black outline of Hello Kitty's head, with the bow and whiskers, is filled with peony-style blooms, leaves and small five-petal blossoms. The linework is solid and even, with the flowers drawn in finer black lines and no shading or colour inside the design. The tattoo sits on the upper back, shown close up against a pale background with a pink hair tie at the edge of the frame.

The cat arrived at Scarrow Point the week the fog came in, a grey thing with a white bow tied on one ear, though nobody on the rock could say who had tied it. Old Hal Penrose swore it had walked up the causeway at low tide carrying a fishing float in its mouth. Ada Trewin, who kept the books for the lifeboat station and had no patience for sea tales, put it down to a stray from the harbour and left the door of the lower store open for it.

By October the cat had made itself the lamp room's chief inspector. It sat on the brass rail while Ada wound the clockwork, watched the wick like a clerk watching a ledger, and at dusk it leapt to the sill and stared out at the water as though counting boats. Ada started leaving it pilchards on the landing. She stopped thinking of it as a stray when she found it asleep in the folds of the oilcloth she used to wrap the spare lens, a tangle of painted blooms around its small grey body.
In November the Hartwell trawler failed to come round the headland. The lifeboat crew searched until the light went and then called it off. Ada climbed the stairs with the lamp turned to full strength and found the cat on the gallery rail, facing east, its tail lashing. She did not sleep. At four the radio crackled with a voice from the lifeboat: a boat drifting two miles off the ledge, and her beam was the only thing they could see.
In the morning the cat was gone from the landing. On the top step lay a loop of white wool, one end still knotted to a cork float. Ada hung it from the lamp rail and kept the light burning until the spring tides brought the Hartwell home.
