Black lettering reading We're all mad here, set in a heart shape with blue scrollwork, tattooed on a forearm.

Heart lettering with blue scrollwork on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the words "WE'RE ALL MAD HERE" arranged in a heart shape, with the letters in bold black lettering. Blue scrollwork swirls frame the heart on both sides, and a small blue ornament sits below the lettering. The photograph is taken straight on at the forearm, with the design filling most of the frame.

Dear Marguerite, The rain has come sideways across the Saturday market since seven, and I have sold one brass teapot and a tin of mismatched thimbles to a man who wanted to know if they were silver. Mr Okafor from the fishmonger's lent me his umbrella, which is blue and has turned inside out twice already. I am writing this on the back of a receipt book because the card table is the only dry thing I own.

You will remember Dad's sign board, the one he painted for the hat stall before his hands got bad. This morning I unrolled it for the first time in years. He had shaped the words into a heart, every letter squeezed and curled until WE'RE ALL MAD HERE sat inside it like a secret, and he'd finished the edges with blue ribbon swirls that look like frost on a window. The ink has bled a little at the bottom where the wet has got in, but the blue has held better than I expected.

A girl stopped at the stall around eleven, soaked to the knees, and asked whether the hats were for sale or just for show. I said both. She picked up a grey felt with a torn brim, turned it over twice, and asked if I thought she looked silly in it. I said I thought she looked like she had somewhere to be. She laughed, put it on anyway, and walked off towards the station without paying, which I have decided to count as a sale.

I am leaving the board up. The rain can have its way with the paint if it wants to. Tell Tom the teapot is still on the shelf in case he changes his mind about wanting a teapot. Love, Ivy
