Colour tattoo of a black-lined circular emblem with blue rings, small stars and a floral vine on the upper arm.

Circular emblem with stars and flowers on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large circular emblem with black linework and blue filled rings sits at the centre of the design, with small stars scattered above it. A vine of yellow-green leaves and small blue flowers curls across the lower part of the arm. The black outlines are clean and the colour is applied in flat fills against pale skin, shot against a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock-maker's widow in Harrowgate Lane kept a round iron door on her cellar, and nobody in the town had ever seen its key. Three rings were cut into its face, each turning on its own pin, and her late husband had set them so they would only answer to the three blue stones he carried back from the coast. Her son Tobias, who could never sit still for a whole sermon, decided the door was a waste of good iron and spent a wet summer trying to open it with a bent nail.

He tried in the mornings before the bells, and at noon when the shop was shut, and in the blue dusk when the stars came out over the wall one by one. Each time he failed, a small star scratched itself into the plaster above the lintel, and by August the ceiling looked like a map of a country nobody had visited. His mother watched him from the washing line and said nothing, which he took as a sign he was getting warmer.

On the last evening of the month a boy from the mill came to the gate, hungry and barefoot, and Tobias gave him the heel of the loaf he had been saving for himself. He forgot about the rings entirely until he reached the cellar door and found the middle ring already turned to its place, as if someone had been patient with it for him. The iron swung open on a cellar of apples and a row of clocks, every one a minute slow, and a vine of small blue flowers had pushed up through the flagstones to meet the light.
