Heart lock and three keys tattoo

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows an ornate heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole, with three decorative keys crossing around it. The lock has shaded, swirling filigree and highlights, and the keys have small markings along their shafts. The composition is centred on the heart, with the keys fanning out to the lower left and right on softly lit skin.

You find the lost property box at ten past three, the way you find most things on nights, by walking the corridor until someone calls your name from a bay you didn't know was open. Inside, between a cardigan with no owner and a tin of travel sweets, sits a heart-shaped padlock gone grey at the edges, its surface worked with swirls so fine you have to tilt it under the strip light to see them. Three old keys are threaded through a loop beside it, each with a small stamped tag along the shaft, the letters worn almost smooth.

Sister Okafor is in the middle of a drug round when you bring it to her, and she doesn't look up. She just says, try them on the linen cupboard, the one with the sticky door, and then the chapel vestry, and then the treatment room where the cabinets always jam. So you do. You crouch in the cold corridor with the keys in your fist and feel each one turn in the hole and stop, every time, against nothing. The lock stays shut. The tags say things like NORTH and B and ASH, and you wonder who had them cut, and why three keys for one heart.

By half past four you've tried the lock on every door on the ward that has one, and the padlock is still closed, its filigree catching the light whenever a trolley rattles past. Sister Okafor finally takes it from you, turns it over once, and hands it back. There's nothing to open, she says. It was never for opening. You hang the keys on their hook in the porters' room, and when you pick the lock up again to put it away it is warm from your hand, and it stays warm all the way home.
