Heart padlock and skeleton key with Always there
Black and grey · Photo
The top photograph shows a heart-shaped padlock with ornate scrollwork and a chain border, shaded in grey with a small keyhole detail, and the script words Always there beside it. The lower photograph shows a skeleton key with a looped scrollwork bow, a chain wrapped around the bow and a shaft with simple teeth, above the same words in bold black script. Both are rendered in black and grey ink on skin with a warm, orange-toned light, and the layout places the design centrally with the lettering to the lower right.

Now sit close, because the ovens don't wait for anybody, and neither did Mr Albie Crane. He came down Marlow Lane every morning at half past four, long before the milk cart, his keys knocking against his hip. The padlock on the yard gate was older than him. It was heart-shaped and tarnished the colour of weak tea, with its chain wound round the iron like something that had given up trying to escape.

One February the key went missing. Albie turned out every pocket in the bakehouse, tipped the flour sacks, and knelt in the coal dust with a candle. Nothing. So he did what a sensible man does and told his wife, Edith, who told him to stop being daft and take the big shears to it. He wouldn't. He said a lock like that deserved better than to be cut for the sake of an impatient morning, and anyway, Edith had scratched her own words inside the heart the year they were courting, and he wasn't having those ruined.
It was the lad who found it, young Danny Pryce, sweeping out the oven ash. The key had slipped through a crack in the floorboards and sat on a joist for three months, all teeth and no fuss. Danny held it up to the lamp, blew the dust off, and said the old lock would have been glad of a bit of company. Albie laughed until he had to sit down on the proving bench.
So the gate's open now, and the key hangs on a nail by the back door where anybody can reach it. Edith's words are still in the heart, if you've the eyes for them. Mind the step on your way out, and take the heel of the brown loaf. It's still warm, the way the morning always is in here.
