Heart tattoo design with bat and roses
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The image is a drawn tattoo design on a grey textured background, with a dark heart at the centre crossed by a baseball bat labelled Good Night. A ribbon banner reading ROTTEN sits across the heart, with a pink-purple rose behind and a teal rose below, plus a pair of lips, a spray can and a small emblem. The linework is bold and outlined, with grey shading on the heart and softer shading on the roses, and the palette mixes greyscale with purple and teal accents.

The canvas has more patches than sky now, and the lion left in March with a bill nobody could pay. Still you walk the ring at dusk with the bat over your shoulder, the one with GOOD NIGHT scratched down the barrel, and you say it out loud to the empty bleachers because somebody on the Hollins and Dace Travelling Circus should.

Mr Dace has signed the ground to a car park firm from Leeds. The lawyer sits in the caravan with his brandy and his clipboard, tapping the word ROTTEN in biro beside the cashbox total as if it were a verdict. You have a can of purple paint from the coconut stall and a plan that started as a joke over the last of the cider.
Past midnight you climb the rigging with the tin in your teeth and paint a rose the size of a caravan on the sagging side of the big top, petals bleeding down over the old lettering. Teal for the stems, purple for the bloom, and a pair of painted lips where the box office used to be. Below, headlights swing across the field and stop.
The lawyer gets out, looks up at the flower and stands there a long time with his mouth open. You drop the bat into the sawdust, hook a leg over the rope and call down that it's good night. He doesn't yet know the show is still on.
