Yarn, needles and script swirls
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A line drawing of a looping, swirling design with two yarn balls, crossed knitting needles, a small red heart and a stylised script word running across the middle. The linework is thin and even in dark red with small red accents, and the drawing sits on a plain pale pink background with no skin visible. The composition is wide and horizontal, with curls extending to both ends.

The grey jumper had come apart at the left cuff on Tuesday, and by Thursday Nell had unpicked the whole sleeve, wound the wool into three fat balls and set them on the windowsill to think about it. Her husband had knitted the jumper the winter they met, badly, with the wrong needles and a pattern he swore he understood. She had never once told him the collar sat crooked.

Ivy came round on Saturday with a bag of scones and a tin of cocoa, and found her grandmother on the kitchen floor with the yarn rolled out across the lino like a trail of spilt ink. 'Gran, you've gone and unpicked Grandad's jumper.' 'I'm not unpicking it. I'm finding the end.' She had been looking for the end for eleven days. The old wool was thin in places, dyed a red nobody sells any more, and where it had frayed, someone had worked a single stitch in a different colour, a little heart rising from the rib that Nell had never noticed before.
They found the note tucked under the ribbing, the pencil gone silver with age: *Knit the cuffs tight, love, it's a long way to the bus stop.* Nell read it twice, then again with her glasses off, and laughed until the cocoa went cold. Ivy wound the balls while Nell cast on, and by teatime the new cuff was half made, two crossed needles lying on the table beside it like a pair of sleepy birds.
Nell finished the cuff the following week, pulling every stitch as tight as he had asked. When it was done she worked the heart in the same faded red and left the seam showing on the outside, where anyone could see the thing had been made by hand.
