Rose and bass clef design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised open rose with a stem and leaf sits within a bold bass clef, with two solid dots to the right. The design uses thick solid black shapes and fine internal lines for the petals and leaf. It is shown in black on a plain white background, with no skin or body visible.

Nobody in the Ashford Silver Band would admit to pressing the rose between the pages of the test piece, though Dennis had the stem marks on his thumb and Pat kept glancing at him. It was a wet Saturday in October, the hall smelling of valve oil and damp coats, and Harold Greave was tapping his baton on the music stand as if the wood might ring.

Dennis played bass. He had played bass for thirty-one years, long enough to know the clef by the feel of the paper, and the two dots at the end of the fourth line told him to go back and take it again from the top. Harold had written those dots into the march himself, in pencil, the year his wife left for Skegness with the dentist. Nobody mentioned that either.
They ran it three times. On the third, a crack went through the middle section like a dropped plate, and the whole band stopped. Pat said it was the damp. Dennis said nothing, only lifted the rose from its page and set it on the tuba bell, where the brass kept it warm. Then he counted them in, one, two, and they went back to the start, as the dots told them to.
