Heartbeat line and heart across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo runs across the upper back and over both shoulders as a heartbeat trace, with an outlined heart at the centre and a small loop beneath it. Lettering in a bold script-style outline continues down each upper arm. The linework is bold and the shading is soft grey, giving the heart and the lettering a raised, three-dimensional look against the skin. The photograph is taken from behind in an indoor room with a wall-mounted screen and a wooden floor.

You find the strip of paper in your father's jacket pocket on the morning of the wedding, when you go looking for a spare cufflink. It is folded into quarters and soft at the creases, and when you open it the thin black line climbs and drops across the width of the page, the same peaks and troughs you have watched on hospital monitors since you were small. In the margin, in his square capitals, someone has written a date and the word RECOVERED, underlined twice.

Downstairs your mother is calling that the car will be outside in ten minutes and that your brother still has not found his shoes. You fold the paper back along its old lines and hold it while you do up your collar. Nobody in the family has ever told you what the night was. You have only ever known that your father drove the long road to Cheltenham without stopping, and that he came back two days later with the paper in his pocket and a new way of standing still in a room.

At the reception the speeches run late and the light goes orange over the car park. When your turn comes you do not read from the cards. You unfold the trace and hold it up so the front tables can see the line, then tell them the one thing you know for certain, which is that the machine kept drawing the whole time, even when nobody in the room was sure it would.

Later, when the band has started and the floor is full, you find your father by the doors with his tie loosened. He takes the paper from you without a word and smooths it flat against his palm, then folds it again along the same creases and slides it back inside his jacket, over his heart.
