Heartbeat line tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph shows the back of a person's neck and upper shoulders, with dark hair pulled up above. A small, thin black tattoo of a heartbeat or ECG waveform sits at the centre of the neck, drawn with delicate single lines and a few sharp peaks. The soft, even lighting and plain background keep the focus on the small design.

You take the night desk at Fenwick Ward because nobody else wants the telemetry screens after two. The corridor lights dim to amber at ten and stay that way until the porters start their rounds, and by three the only sound is the soft tick of the monitors through the glass. The line on bed nine jumps every time the cleaner's trolley rattles past, and you have learned to read it the way other people read weather.

Mrs Okafor in bay C is eighty-one and insists on being called Vera. She tells you she worked the pits in Castleford for thirty years and that her heart has outlasted two husbands and a bad hip. At half past three she asks you to sit with her while she counts her beats against the screen. You do. Her peaks come neat and even, five to a breath, like a row of stitches. "Mine's still going," she says, and she sounds pleased rather than frightened.
Near dawn the line on bed nine flattens into a long grey sigh. You are already moving, pads out of the drawer, calling the registrar, your voice steady because the ward needs it steady. Then the peak comes back, small and stubborn, and the registrar's hand is on your shoulder saying it's a lead come loose. Your palms are wet anyway.
At handover you print Vera's strip for her file, a long run of peaks with one wobble where she laughed. Folded in your pocket it goes soft by the time you reach the car park, and you keep touching it all the way home, like a coin someone told you was lucky.
