Small fine line script on the nape
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single line of handwritten style script sits vertically at the centre of the nape, with the hair pulled up above it. The linework is very thin and even, in black ink against pale skin. The photograph is black and white and framed from behind, with a knitted jumper along the bottom edge.

The telegraph wire at Harrowby ran only as far as the post office counter, and Mrs Ada Pell had worked that counter for nineteen years without once being asked to send a single word. Usually the forms had ten or twelve. On a wet Thursday in March a farmer's boy brought in a half-sheet with one word written down the middle, pressed so hard the pencil had torn the paper.

"It's all he wants sent," the boy said. "Mr Keach said you'd know what to do with it."
She did know. The word was for a brother in Leeds whom nobody in Harrowby had seen since the war. Ada tapped it out in Morse, letter by letter, the way her husband had taught her before he went to sea and never came back. Each dot ran down the wire like a stitch pulled tight.
Three days later a reply came back along the same line, also one word, and the boy carried it up the lane through the rain. Ada never learned what either word had meant, or whether the brother came home. She kept the torn half-sheet in the drawer under the scales, and on Friday evenings, when the till was counted, she sometimes took it out and read the single line of letters again, slanting down the page as if it had been written to be carried.
