Heartbeat line with skyline outlines on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline tattoo runs across the forearm as a heartbeat trace that rises into outlines of a large wheel, a tall spire and a rounded dome. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on skin. The composition is a horizontal band that fills most of the frame, photographed straight on against a pale background.

The monitor above bed nine had been drawing the same uneven line since midnight, and Priya Nair had stopped reading the numbers and started reading the window instead. From the fourth floor of St Clement's you could see the big wheel turning slowly over the river, its cabins lit like paper lanterns, and beyond it the copper dome of the old market hall, green at the edges where the rain had got under the paint.

Mr Okafor had driven the number 12 for thirty-one years and knew the city by its corners rather than its landmarks. His daughter had asked for the sound turned low, so Priya kept the monitor's chirp to a murmur and sat with her back to the door. "Tell me what you can see," he said, eyes closed. She described the wheel, the dome, the spire of the church that nobody had repaired since the war. He corrected her. The spire had lost its weathervane in March, he said, and somebody had put a crane up beside it that was still there.
The line spiked. A small alarm chirped twice, and Priya was on her feet before she had decided to move, calling for Ruth down the corridor. Ten minutes later the trace had settled back into its old rhythm and the room smelled of antiseptic and cold tea. Mr Okafor opened one eye and held out his hand, palm up, the way he used to hold out a ticket. "Draw it for me," he said. "The way you saw it."
So she uncapped a biro and drew the wheel, the dome and the spire across his palm, joining them with a single wavering line that rose and fell like the one on the screen. He closed his fingers over it carefully, as if it might smudge.
