Fine line abstract squiggle on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line forms an abstract looping shape with a small tick-like mark above it, running diagonally up the forearm. The linework is even and delicate with no shading, and the ink appears slightly soft at the edges. The forearm is photographed from above against a beige stone-effect floor, with a patterned turquoise fabric visible at the bottom edge.

Dear Tobiah,

You will think me mad, but the river Sallow will not sit still on the chart. Every time I lift the nib the water runs off the page, so for three weeks I have drawn it in one unbroken stroke from the salt marsh at Ornesk to the weir below the palace gardens. The Chancellor wants a dry line of boundaries, a box and a number for every mile. I have given him a single thread that loops back on itself at the bends, because that is how the water moves, and he has sent it back twice.

The loops are the hard part. Where the river doubles near Hawley Mill I must turn the pen without crossing my own path, or the stroke thickens and the reeds look like spilt ink. Old Marta, who ground the pigments for the king's father, showed me how to breathe out at each turn and let the wrist follow the water. She said a line drawn in one breath is the only kind the river will recognise as its own.

Something has come of it. Yesterday the Chancellor came down to the drawing room in his stockinged feet, which is how I knew he was not angry. He traced the line with one finger from the sea to the gardens and stopped at the small tick I had put beside the mill, where the ferry turns back. He asked what it marked. I said it was the place where somebody always changes their mind about crossing.

He has approved the chart and wants it framed for the Long Hall. I am sending the original by Thursday's post, rolled, so please keep your sleeve away from the ink when you carry it up the stair for me.

Yours in the wet, Cassiel
