Script word and heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of vertical script lettering, with an outlined heart overlapping the word on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the design reads as solid black ink on the skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against warm, orange-toned lighting.

Our Ruth had never caught a train on time in her life, so when the 4.10 from Leeds slid into platform three with its doors already sighing open, I was the one who had to run. Dad always said she'd be late for her own wedding and then apologise to the vicar for the delay.

She stepped down with a holdall in one hand and a paper bag of sausage rolls in the other, the bag already going translucent with grease. We stood on the wet platform while the rain came sideways under the canopy and the tannoy announced a delay to something nobody was catching. She was twenty-six and still talked to me as if I were nine, telling me my coat was wrong for October and that Leeds had better pies than Hull, which was a lie.
While we waited for the driver to sort out the signal, she leaned against the steamed-up window of the carriage and drew in the condensation with one finger. SISTER, written downwards the way she always wrote, the letters leaning and loopy. Then she went back over the last part of the word and crossed it with a heart, two curls meeting at the bottom, and pressed her thumb into the middle so the lines smudged at the edges.
"So you know where to find me," she said. Then the guard whistled, she was up the step, and the word stayed on the glass, drying slowly from the top down until the train took it. Later, in my coat pocket, I found the platform ticket she'd shoved there at the barrier, and on the back, in biro, she had drawn the same word and the same heart, pressed hard enough to come through the other side.
