Henna feather on an arm

Other · Colour · Photo

A large feather is drawn across the skin, with its central quill running diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. The feather is filled with fine scrollwork, rows of dots, and curled tendrils in a single brown tone. The design fills most of the frame, with a dark blurred background at the top left and red fabric at the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The man at the wicket wanted his letter read back to him before he would let it cross, and I was the only one on the Veles bridge who could make out his mother's hand. Every morning I sat under the corrugated awning with a tin of walnut ink, a penknife, and a grey goose feather I had kept since my father's funeral. People came to me because they could not say certain things aloud to a uniform, so I wrote down what they meant and left out what the sergeant did not need to know.

I cut the vane of the feather into a comb of fine barbs so the ink would break into thin lines. Each curl I drew was a word I had not been allowed to write plainly. A woman brought me a page that said only that the swallows had come back to the north roof, and I dressed it in loops and dots until it looked like a prayer and not a report. Sergeant Tabor stamped everything that passed my table. He never once asked why the margins grew crowded with little round marks, one for every letter I had carried over.

The last letter I wrote was for myself. I addressed it to the far bank, where my sister kept a shop that sold thread and nothing else, and I told her the feather had finally gone thin at the tip. When the barrier lifted that evening I walked to the middle of the bridge, set the quill on the black water, and watched the curls unspool under the lamplight until the current carried every one of them past the gate.
