Henna flower and swirls on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A henna design covers the inner forearm, centred on a large flower with a spiral centre and petal-like scallops. Flowing curved lines, dotted borders, spirals and small dot-flowers fill the arm, with fine hatched and spiralled detail inside the shaded panels. The design is in a single brown henna stain, shown against a purple and white patterned cloth.

The kitchen at Hollin Farm smelled of wet wool and lemon, and the paste in the blue mixing bowl had been resting since dawn. You stir it with a teaspoon the way your aunt taught you, slow, until it holds a line when you lift it. Outside, the light over the lambing shed is already going at half past three, and each time the back door opens, cold comes in smelling of diesel.

Dilys from the next farm had asked for the big flower, the one with a spiral at its heart and petals like scallop shells. Her daughter Ffion is marrying in February, and the henna night will be held in the barn under strings of bulbs. You spread the purple cloth Dilys brought back from Leicester market across the table, the one with white dots like frost on a windscreen, and you start with the centre. Spiral first, always from the middle outward, because if you go the other way the lines wobble.

Your fingers go stiff and you stop to breathe on them. The petals go on one at a time, each a soft bead of paste pressed out of the cone. Dilys watches over your shoulder and says nothing, which is how you know it is right. When the swirls are running down toward the edge of the design, you add the little dot-flowers like punctuation, and then you sit back. The paste will dry to a dark crust and deepen over two days, or so you have been promised.

Dilys goes out to check the ewes. You wait for the crust to crack, lift it away with a blunt knife, and find the flower underneath, rust-brown and exact, its spiral sitting where you meant it to. In a fortnight it will have faded to a ghost of itself, and you will be glad of the fading. For now you keep the cloth across your knees and watch the frost creep up the window while the petals darken.
