Henna bracelet design on forearm and hand

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A dense brown henna design covers the inner forearm, wrist and back of the hand, with a scalloped border, stacked panels and a central medallion. The fine dotted lines and lattice filling are applied in a single tone, with a few finger rings of pattern extending to the fingers. The image is a close crop of a bare arm resting on a thigh, with denim shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Halfway up the Kanzo pass the cone of paste began to sweat through its muslin, and Parveen stopped the mule under a rock ledge so it would not go cold. The wind came off the snow with nothing to stop it. She unwound the cloth, pressed her thumb to the nozzle and smelled lemon and tannin, the dull green of crushed leaves. Three days' walk from the village where the wedding was, and the paste still had to hold.

She had drawn designs for twenty years on palms and forearms, but this commission had come from her cousin's daughter with a folded sheet of paper: a band of scallops, a lattice like a fishing net, and a medallion the size of a coin with petals around it like a sun coming up out of the sea. Parveen had practised it all winter on the backs of bread wrappers. The lattice was the hard part. Every diamond had to close without touching its neighbour, or the stain would bleed into a blur.

At the top of the pass a shepherd's hut had a tin roof and a stove. She warmed the paste against the iron, stirred in a little more lemon, and sat in the doorway with her knees up while the shepherd's boy watched from the corner. He asked why anyone would paint a pattern that washed away. She said it lasted a fortnight, which was longer than most promises. He laughed, then asked her to do his thumb.

Going down, the mule was lighter and the cone almost empty. Three days later in the village, the stain had darkened from orange to rust, and the medallion stood sharpest where the lines were finest. Her cousin's daughter turned the hand slowly toward the window, and Parveen decided the pass had been worth it, though she would never say so.
