Herb sprig in a red circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A slender sprig of herb with narrow, pointed leaves is drawn in black linework with grey shading, set against a thin red circle that frames it. The fine, delicate lines and soft shading give the leaves some depth. The black and grey botanical study sits on the forearm, with the red outline as the only colour accent against pale skin.

The rosemary came up through the cracks in the north wall of Hallow Tor the year after the roof went in. Nobody planted it. My grandmother Edith said birds carried it, but she said that about most things she couldn't be bothered to explain. I was nine, and I counted the stems the way other children counted sheep.

The castle had a kitchen garden inside the curtain wall, and the rosemary grew in the corner where the stones held the sun longest. In the evenings I cut sprigs with the kitchen shears and tied them with string to dry on the hook by the scullery door. Mother said it was for remembering, and I assumed she meant the old lords whose names were cut into the lintel above the gate.
When the estate was sold, surveyors came with red paint and marked every wall they intended to keep. They drew a ring round the east tower and wrote a number inside it. I stood beside the man with the clipboard and asked whether the rosemary was on his list. He looked at the wall, then at me, and said a plant was not a structure. I took a cutting anyway, wrapped it in a damp handkerchief, and pressed it into the soil of a flat in Shrewsbury.
It grew there for eleven years on a windowsill that got no sun at all. Last spring it flowered blue for the first time, and I understood it had been waiting for the wall to stop being a wall. I still dry a bunch each autumn and hang it by the door. Nobody asks what it is for.
